Default My tale

Hi all:

My name is Luis, and I am writing from South America (Chile).

I was looking for info about how long do disc fishes live, and by accident I found this excellent forum. I completely agree with the fact discus are incredible beings, I had aquarium for 16 years, but only two years ago I really started to own more exotic plants and fishes. I allways wanted to have a couple of these discs but they are quite expensive and they suppose to be very difficult to maintain. This year I decided to have a couple, so "Compact disc" and "Vynil disc" came to my aquarium. They were very shy but they became accostumed to me and we became friends. They have such cool personalities, if they only could speak....well, unfortunately, "Vynil disc" was sick or weak, because in the first change of water (eight days after buying them) he died.....what a pity!!!!. Then Compact spent almost two weeks hidden among the plants, and turned very dark. Incredible, I didnīt know who felt worse, if he or me...well, I convinced him to live, I looked for a fish-sicologist, but well....I couldnīt find one so I used live food for that and a lot of pacience, and slowly we became friends again. I convinced him that his tank mate died in an accident, driving too fast...and apparently he trusted me again.

In the meanwhile I found one person that rear these fishes, he is very devoted and after many suggestions I bought "Hard disc" to him. The tale doesnīt finish there, "Hard disc" came together with a brother that nobody wanted to buy, because he has only the posterior halves of the dorsal and anal fins, so the owner called him "Franky" (for Frankenstein...). He is not the most spectacular discus, it is true, but I like the idea of having a fish
nobody liked, makes me think about loving him no matter is it is perfect or not, he is special anyway. So my friend sent me the fishes by aircraft (he is 800 Km from my city); my new guests were literally "flying discs"...I use to tell my friends that they came in their sits, "like everybody else"....

Now they are a gang of three mates, and in the meanwhile I met another person that has 20 discus in a huuuuge aquarium, he said will give me three of his aquatic sons: Goliat, a very big cobalt disc, and two of the "blue diamond" variety he reared, he said will give them to me as a present, because he gave many many advice by e-mail when I started with the first ones.

Well that is my "freak" tale with these fishes. I completely agree that these are the most magnificent fishes I ever had, I couldīt imagine one could really love a fish, they became really special members of the family here. I hope some day to see they spawning, these two persons I met say it is magical, how both parents are completely devoted to their sons and daughters....more than many people!, they say.

I recommend that beginners ask everything at first, and after some time (saving some money) buy them to people that is dedicated to rear them, not in any pet shop. They are not extremely delicate as thought, but require some dedication and pacience. In reward, you will experience a very unique fascination for these creatures as you never should experience with any other fish...
