i am not sure of the rate of growth but I would think they need a little more than a 50 gal. I would think wither a 75-100. Also keep a tight top on the tank as i have seen some try to get out of the tank. My old roomate had one in a 100 gallon and was about 2' long. Forget any plants.

They are awesome to watch
