Sounds like you are doing everything right, definitely add the AC. It wont do anything but add area for bacteria to grow. DO NOT clean it for at least a month even 2, and when you do, rinse it in old tank water or dechlorinated water. Do you live next to a creek or river? if you do, go down and get a few small slimy rocks. They will kick start you bio growth. Patience is the key, and don't slow the ammonia to much, or the nitrites may not catch hold. And check the expiration dates on your test kits.
