However, the idea that the FOWLR is not a reef tank is a myth, with the separation into different catagories arbitrary and flawed. If it has live rock in it, it is a reef. Reef tanks aren't reef tanks just because they have coral in them. Ignoring the needs of the live rock in a FOWLR tank because it isn't considered "reef rock" is a huge mistake. Eventually things tend to balance out once the once-live rock is dead on the outside and live only in the middle, but that's such a waste. Many people try a FOWLR in an attempt to save money on lighting, but they only wind up wasting their money on rock that dies.
Just thought I'd mention it.
By the way, Nitrospira is the bacteria now known to do the job that was once attributed to Nitrobacter.
