If you have a Walmart around you grab a few packs of there plant bulbs, I can't think of what they are called but it's a low/medium light plant that's easy to grow and is entry levle.
Another great plant for beginners is java moss. I love this stuff its a low-high light plant that grows like crazy. If you can get your hands on some of it grab it. This will grow well in any aquarium.
