loaches need groups. when they are in groups they are always out in front in a big loach-pile.

basically, the more secure a fish feels, the more you will see it. that's why you need plenty of hiding places for fish, and schooling fish need schools. the more hiding places you have for the fish, the more they will be out in the open because they know that if they get scared they have somewhere safe to go, so they will feel safer to come out.

your horseface loach is probably scared by himself. get him a few friends and they will probably come out more.

african butterfly fish are awesome. so long as you don't get anything in the tank thats small enough to fit in his mouth, and that wont nip fins, he could stay. but feed him live foods, that's when he really will shine and is the most fun to watch. they do tend to just sit and wait for food though.
