Default New 5gal: adding 2 old ADF's and...what else?

Hello everyone

I am presently the happy mother of two ADFs named Sir Wellington the Third and Barnaby (although judging from the "cuddling"...one should be renamed"

They are currently in a 2 gallon tank, but I now have a 5 gallon tank that I will be moving them to within the week. It's a brand new tank with nothing in it yet

I'm figuring on getting one or two more frogs to keep mine company, but I was also thinking of maybe a few tetras or guppies? I'm not going to be breeding the fish (maybe the frogs if they actually have eggs), and I'm not particular of how long they live. I'd just like some mini fish that wil befriend my frogs and make the tank look like the middle and top levels of the tank are being used.

Let me know!

Thanks,

Ducey

Thanks!

I actually do have a beta at home that I could probably take back from my mom. She stole him from me over the summer, so that is how I ended up buying frogs.

In a 5g, your choices are really limited. I'd go with either a betta OR 6 dwarf rasboras OR 2-3 male guppies.

Cool thanks! Yeah I agree about not having a lot of space.
I was thinking 4 fish absolute tops, but 1-3 would be much better.

I thought that male guppies dont get along well? (without other females)

actually male guppies arent too bad in groups.
male guppies are aggressive most often in the presence of females, hence the at least 2 females for every male rule

Interesting, alright I'll check out some guppies today at the store.

I think for now what I'm going to do is buy a bunch of plants (maybe the bulbs you grow yourself?) so that it is like an underwater forest, and then get one or two more frogs.

My current tank has no mechanical filtration, but my new one does. I've heard that ADFs are really sensitive to the sound as well as the current. I was thinking of buying a little piece of cork and attaching it right below the filter so that the water hits it first and then trickles off the side to slow down the current. The plants should also help.

Will the vibrations still be too much? They do seem to swim a lot more without the filter but I don't know if it was because of the current or the sound.

its most likly to be the current, try adding some floating plants to slow it down, or some tall ones but the filter out put to again slow the current down.i would add either 1 or 2 male guppies OR just leave it as a froggy tank.either way im sure it will look good, could you post any pics?

The tank is still completely bare. I only have a few pieces of plants from my other tank that is floating around. Today I'm going to the store to buy some more gravel and two more frogs.

I also bought a TON of plants from an ebay seller that I heard of through a different thread. Its called "Aquadisestore" and there are so many different varieties of plants...and free shipping!

Once I get all the plants in and the frogs I'll post some pictures.

For a floating plant...should I keep my water level a little lower than normal so that it's farther away from the light?

On top of that:

Since the plants won't be here for atleast 5 days...should I not move them in yet? I can get the gravel and transfer the rocks and the hiding places, and I do have one plant to move. It's just that having a 2g tanks and a 5g tank on your desk doesn't leave much room for studying!

as for the floating plants, dont worry about lowering the water, just move them around every few days to let the light reach the plants below, the tend to grow faster but just cut them back when they are out of control.its up to you if you move them in or not, personally i wouldnt as the stress from moving them, metting new friendsand the fuss of modifying the tank justs makes it worst.wait untill the plants arive, set it up and pop them in. of course, its really up to you, their isnt a "right" way of doing it, just peoples opions.on another note, good for you getting planty of plants, frogs love plants to rest on and use as cover, they benefit the water too. with the plants, caves, rocks and more room, your frogs should be very happy indeed

I've decided to just move the frogs to the new tank with their old plant and toys. They'll have a week to get used to the area, then i'll add in the plants. Then, after another week or two, I'll look into buying the new frogs.

Question though... how much bleach is okay to use in cleaning the old tank up?

good luck with the transfer, im always happy knowing animals are being upgraded to a bigger tank. use little amount of bleach possable, wash the tank with just water many times after and make sure they isnt a drop left of bleach left.try cleaning without bleach first, just scrub, scrub, scrub and if that doesnt work, then resort to minimal amount of bleach.

Another question with the tank, (by the way the frogs are loving the new space they have)

For plants to add to the tank...so far I got mostly plants that are just attached to rocks or float. If I were to get a plant that you actually plant into the gravel, is regular gravel okay? Or do I need a special substrate?

i dont use a special substrate, use common gravel, they grow fine in my tank, try some cheap plants first and see if they live, if not, their is always the fake plant option
