I was trying my luck as raising some tadpoles I caught in my pool. See lower posts) I had toads, tree frogs and cubans....the cubsn ate most the of the others, I took the remaining cubans and put them in with my goldfish tank and about 15 of them lived out of the 20....This morning as I was feeding them one of the tadpoles walked up the side of the glass, but he still has a long tail, but 4 feet. The others are still tadpoles and back legs only, he grew first.
What do I do with him, what kind of cage to put him in, I know I just can't let him go out in the backyard like this, but I don't want him to get out of the tank and dry up.... PLease , I really didn't think they would make it to adults as this was my first try. |

I was wrong....more of them are froglets...I think some may have already jumped out and died. I found one of them perched on the filter a few minutes ago. I covered the tank in the only thing I had Glade Press and Seal ( no saran wrap) and am off to try and find something to put them in with a proper lid...they are fast as lightning though even though some still are on the glass ( behind the filter) and they still have a long tail
But suggestions would still be loved |

Are these tadpoles of frogs you keep yourself or wild ones? I have no experience of keeping amphibians so I wont give advice there, but if they are wild frogs, my garden is currently full of them. they like to be kept moist but adult frogs and toads very rarely return to the pond, in fact usually only to breed, so they should be ok out of water. as soon as the tail dissapears they should be ok to release into your backyard. in the meantime you could put something into the goldfish bowl like a log or rock that sticks out of the water so they have somewhere to sit as once they get to that stage they start to breathe air rather than use gills, and could drown if they cant get out of the water.
sorry if none of that makes any sense, but i hope it helps!! |
