55 gallon turtle tank

I'm setting up a 55 gallon aquarium for some of my turtles at my school. As of now, I have about a dozen goldfish(feeders), 2 crawfish(cleanup) and a 4 inch male painted and a 3-4 inch snapper. I already know the answer will prolly be no, but are there any species of fish that I can keep with them? The turtles are well fed with feeders, frozen foods, and pellets. nothing too small, and it has to be cheap. I was thinking about maybe a pair of convicts. There aren't very many plants(total of 5), but I"m putting quite a bit of rock. Any suggestions?

um, ive heardo f alot of people putting whiteclouds or sumthing small and fast in there turtle tank

I wouldn't want to try white clouds just because they are so small. I'm looking for something larger, possibly a cichlid.

I think I may just get a pair of convicts and try my luck.

Fish=food to turtles so I wouldn't put anything in with them.

Plus turtles produce ALOT of waste and adding fish to the tank just adds to that. If you want to keep them healthy, leave them by themselves.

The tank is already overcrowded. I wouldn't add to the bioload or you might end up with some sick turtles on your hands. Be prepared---that snapper is going to get HUGE! Painteds "only" get to be about 10 inches scl. The point being that the 55g tank is not going to be big enough for very long.

yeah i wouldnt get anything else to go in the tank i have a ybs in a 60 gallon and dont like the idea of haveing him in ther but had to bc i moved back in with my folks so not enough room for his pond he had in my old place he and the fish had there own room lol yeah he is a brat he dont like it at all

First of all I would suggest taking the gold fish out of the feeding rotation for your turtles. They are very fatty and of little nutritional value to the turtles... Feeder fish should really only be given in small quantities once or twice a month due to the high protein levels.. You don't want the turtles shells to pyramid!

As someone said any type of fish in a turtle tank is food- so think guppies and rosie red minnows if and when you want to feed live fish.

Also make sure the rocks you are putting in the tank are larger than the turtles heads, smaller ones will be eaten and may cause impaction.

Fish are a no-no. Also, as was stated, a55 isnt really a good home for the turtles. The YBS might be okay in there if hes a male, but the snapped definately needs a bigger home.... like a pond. I would say 180 minimum for snappers. Ive got a couple big RES' in a 75 with a land area built outside the tank they can crawl into, and I still wish I could give them more room.

It's a painted BTW, and he died. It was a three day weekend, and when I got back, he was floating on the surface, dead. I have no idea what could have happened...there were no scratches on him, the water was fine, because all the fish were stiull alive, and there were plenty of goldfish. The only thing that I can think of, is that he ingested a piece of gravel or something.

The snapper has a home, and a future home once he out grows what I can give him.
