Default Just a few questions...

1)my air pump has a small switch on the side. i cant figure out wat it does, except that the filter is slightly quieter. is that all its for or is it something else?

2)im writing exams at the moment and i was wondering if i could turn the air pump off while i study or if it will hurt my fish? (alternatively, if that switch does make it quieter then its not neccessary)

3) my betta has been much happier since i bought him a new tank, but since tues iv noticed he likes to lie on the gravel by the filter. is this normal or is he sick? i havnt seen any visible signs of illness

What kind of filter do you have? If its a power filter, you don't need an airpump. The filter should provide enough aeration. I personally don't like airpumps because they are noisy.

I'm not sure what the switch is for.

Have you checked your water parameters (ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates) since you moved him to a new tank? Did you cycle the tank?

its just a small corner filter that attachs to the air pump to run.

he's been fine until yesterday, i just noticed when i came in from school that he was lying there. he saw me and started swimming around but then he goes and lies down again.

unfortunately i don't have a testing kit yet, i wanna buy 1 as soon as possible. i know it was very irresponsible not 2 buy 1 but they are priced between R269 and R500 and i ddnt hav enough money left after buying the tank.

How often are you doing water changes or cleaning the substrate? How big is your tank.

Bettas do not need a lot of air, they breath from the surface. If your tank is cycled, shutting if off will kill off some of the good-guy bacteria. If it is not cycled, shutting it down won't hurt anything. But, with no filtration, you will have to do 100% water changes instead of partial ones done in a cycled tank.

Study somewhere else.

Serrasalmus
Tetradon
(figure eights and dwarfs are the
exception).

I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families:
Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers.

My pump has that littleswitch too, if we're talking about the same thing it has a little + on one side and a little - on the other. It's the make the filter stronger or weaker. I usually keep it on weaker, because bettas don't like current.

jj, I think you are talking about on a power filter. I have the same thing on my Aquaclear filters.

But Robyn is talking about an air pump.

(atleast I think so)
