I have been looking for a fish tank for a little while now, and im trying not to buy it at PetSmart or anywhere like that b/c they are outrageous. I came across this 29 gallon tank, 3-4 years old, a wal-mart job, for $75 (including stand). Pictures are attached. What do you guys think? Is it worth it. And also, if ya'll know of anything else i would need to start the tank, please let me know. I have a little 5 gallon set up in my house, so can you tell me what the difference in up-keep and materials is between my 5 gallon and the 29 gallon? Thanks for any info!
![]() ^^^ The tank and stand itself. ![]() ^^^^ And what is being included. Also, it needs a light bulb for the light. How much is that going to run me? And sorry if this isnt the place to post this. I'm not really sure where it belongs. |

well, the price is ok. anyway, the light tube thing is going to cost a few bucks if it is just for general fish keeping. you just need to know some general knowledge such as cycle the tank and you are good to go. by the way, get a bucket. maybe you have one but i don't see one in photo... just making sure you have one....

As AAA said, the price is ok. The upkeep is very easy as dont have to worry about it as much as things go wrong faster in a 5g then a 29g. Just gotta keep up on weekly waterchanges..... Their rather easy

You may want to upgrade the filter if its the one that comes in kits at Walmart. Aquaclear and Marineland HOB filters are great. You may even want to go for a cannister (a little more $$ though), but they do a nice job of keeping the tank water very clean.
Something else you may want to get is a Python. It is a syphon (used for gravel vac'ing and water changes) that you hook up to the faucet and it takes water out, then change it to put clean water back in. Saves alot of trouble because you won't have to use buckets. 29g is a good step up from the 5g so you will have more water to change. It is much easier though to upkeep larger tanks IMO. I think its a good deal. In case you don't know about the nitrogen cycle, here are a few articles: http://faq.thekrib.com/begin-cycling.html http://www.tropicalfishcentre.co.uk/Cycle.htm And a couple on fishless cycling: http://www.aquahobby.com/articles/e_fishless.php http://www.tropicalfishcentre.co.uk/Fishlesscycle.htm Welcome to the site!

This sounds like a good deal....But just as JustOneMore20 said, upgrade the filter and do the research on the Nitrgen Cycle.

So where do i get the aquarclear and marineland filters? And for that matter, where do i get the light bulb at? I'm not even sure what brand tank it is (im thinking eclipse if its from wally-world) I dont even know where to get a filter at and what size, shape, or color it should be.
And the cycling info helped a lot. In my 5 gallon tank i killed close to 20 fish ( all little goldfish, but fish none-the-less) because i was impatient. I finally bought an albino oscar and he has done great. The 29 gallon should be fun. Quote:

Uh oh. The albino oscar was a big mistake. They get huge (up to 12 inches) and need at least a 55, although i reccomend a 70-75. How long was he in the 5 gallon? he may already be stunted.
and someone mentioned a python syphon. These are great, but only really necessary for larger tanks that require many bucket trips. It would make water changes a little easier, but it could just be a waste of money. They are rather expensive depending on how long yours would need to be.
