aquarium salt

i was just wondering because i bought two puffers and seeing how they need salt if its possible to overuse the aquarium salt?

Yes it is and thats not the correct type of salt to use for brackish or marine environments. For brackish water puffers you should use marine salt like instant ocean or red sea or seachem.

If you bought the DP like you had said you were going to buy, DO NOT USE SALT. They are truly a freshwater fish and will not appreciate any salt. Also if you ended up wanting to add a couple otos (only fish recommended for DP) to help with clean-up they cannot tolerate any salt.

But with the question about marine salt, it will be fine, the only difference that I've been informed about the two (aquarium v. marine) is that the marine salt has calcium, and other stuff added to it. Nothing that would harm a fish that likes salt. Aquarium salt is "just" salt nothing more nothing less.

i actually got green spoted puffers. . . . . now DP's. . . .. . . and they need brakish water the man at the pet store said ( n you know people at pet co., they dont know crap*) so i looked it up online and found they truely should be in brackish. .. . . . would aquraim salt be ok or marine salt?

to truely understand why you MUST use marine salt, you must understand what a brackish environment is.

Brackish water - Where ocean meets a river. so why would you use AQUARIUM salt when Brackish water requires the OCEAN

I would also suggest a hydrometer to find out what concentration you are shooting for... also, always mix marine salt out of the aquarium. Specific gravity should be 1.010-1.015 for green spotted puffer juvi's, full saltwater as they age (1.023). I would gradually introduce the new saltwater... first getting the specific gravity in your tank to be around 1.005 the first week, second week 1.010.
