the red minor tetras aka jewel tetras seem to nip the fins of others. is it possible for me to add fishes such as guppies and swordtails. I have abt 5 tetras in the tank. some have told me to increase the # to reduce the nipping. will 7 work and what other fish should i avoid getting that will get nipped by the tetras

What size tank? It makes a difference whether fish would have room to escape the nippy tetras.

In a 46g tank, I'd get atleast 10 or so of the Serpae (Red Minor/Jewel) tetras. They are still going to be nippy though, so I wouldnt keep fish like male guppies with them. Swordtails might work, though I don't think I'd try it. Platies or Mollies may be a better option since they don't have quite as much finnage. Gouramis would probably work too (just an idea). You could even add another school of fish that don't have long fins if you wanted.

Serpaes are mean, they picked on my angels and kribs. Only fish I ever took back to the store. I'm told they are better behaved in bigger schools (I had 4). They pick on each other.
