Yes, its normal. A new fish shakes up the hierarchy, they have to "find their place" again. They also introduce new diseases-you ever go on vacation and come home with a cold? And feeding more means a little mini ammonia spike, then a nitrite spike as you filter catches up to the new load. Usually its the newcomer who gets the most stress, but old fish stress too. If you are talking about the tank in your avatar, you could really use a lot more rocks.

Assuming your water quality is good, and the ich outbreak is over, one thing you can do when adding new fish, especially with territorial ones like cichids, is to rearrange the rockwork/decor just before you put the new fish in. Then they all have to find new territories, and re-establish their pecking order.
More typically it is the new kid that is stressed out. By the way - what is your fish doing that makes you think it is stressed? Could it just be your hands or bag in the tank, and changing the lid or lighting as you add the new guy? |
