Default ammonia and pH

Hi... yes im new at this whole fish situation....
I have a 55 gallon fresh water tank... and i used to have a girl who worked for me take care of thetank,.. but she is on maternity leave and now have no one to take care of my fish!
so i feed them once a day... and i saw that we now have 7 little baby fish.. i attempted to read up on it and it says that the water needs to be kept very clean and goodstuff. i tested the water today and the ammonia was almost 4.0! i have no idea what to do. i went to my fish store and asked them what to do about low pH and i started doing frequent water changes and that seemed to help. but now this is the first time the ammonia is off. what should i do! help please

PS i love talking about my fish

Water changes are the best way to get rid of ammonia. Are you feeding more because you have babies? They really don't eat much. Add some Prime or Amquel+ to help and check to make sure all your filters are operating and aren't clogged.

ammonia is produced from the fish waste. i think the best thing to do would be to cut down on your feeding. There are also ammonia tablets that decrease the ammonia but i think that would be the last resort.
