Hi! New to the forum, needless to say. Anyway, I currently have one two-week-old platy fry alone in a one gallon tank. I had the parents in the tank (it was temporary, I was going to get a bigger tank), they ate all the other fry until I moved the baby to a bowl. The parents were sadly killed when we had a two day power outage, meaning no heat. We ended up going to a hotel and I snuck the fish in. I couldn't just leave them to die!

Sadly, the parents died anyway (Stress most likely. One survived the journey but attained Ick the day we got home and died a day later), but I was able to move the fry back to the tank. So now that you all know my history as a aquarist...
I want to start a new tank, but still small. About 10 gal. I know that's small, but I want a tank to fit on my dresser and bigger would be too much weight, I presume. Anyway, I'm kinda centering this tank around the little baby platy (can't tell the sex yet, btw). I obviously want some more platies and maybe mollies, tetras, guppies or a betta. Basically I want a decent variety of fish, so probably nothing that requires a lot of fish or a lot of room. I know there's not much to work with here space wise.
Also, could I set an algae eater like a cory (but don't those need big groups?) or an octo. I'd really like a frog, but again, I know I don't have much room. The bottom of the tank would be empty anyway, right, so why couldn't I add a bottom feeder? I've been researching for weeks (including perusing this forum) and still cannot come up with a good tank set-up.
Basically- the only guides are that it has to be a 10 gallon and include a platy. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks! And sorry for the long length...
