You can buy silk plants which do tend to look better than the fake plastic ones. You can buy them from a craft store and mix and match them yourself. Personally I have several just suction cupped to the back of my tank.

Yes you can put it under the gravel. I have the one in my 10 gallon under the gravel. That one is a wand, though smaller. I also have a regular airstone in my 5 gallon that I buried under the gravel because otherwise it makes more noise. I keep that tank in my bedroom so quieter was an obvious goal
