You make a good point though. The bacteria will die very quickly if there is no fish waste for it to eat. This would be true of BioSpira, borrowed colonies, or even if you cycled the tank in a traditional way. If you got your cycle running and then didn't add fish and stopped adding ammonia, you'd kill the bacteria.

One other option, though not a good one IMO, is to dose the BioSpira and add fish food to decay to give the bacteria some food source.
