New betta
I picked up a couple betta today (actually got for free from petco since they were mislabeled and I'm friends with the guy there). I got a crowntail plakat male (white/red) and a blue crowntail female. I put them in a 5g with nothing but a heater for now until I get a set up for them. She's in a breeder net. Well it's been about 4 hours and there is already a bubble nest going up. I'm impressed!
I'm still not 100% sure what to give these guys as a home. Do I need to get a filter for each (probably 1.5g tanks) or can I just do like 30% changes twice a week and be good?

I would use filtration.
As for a home, check out Lee's Kritter Keepers on amazon.com
Medium- 3 US gallons
Large- 5 US gallons
As for a filter, these Azoo Palm filters are fairly inexpensive and should work just fine.

Im sure they would do fine with just the water changes. I dont have a filter with my betta and hes happy and ive had him for about 2 years now. They like still waters so thats why i just do the water change.

They are actually going into an unconventional tank. That's why I questioned the filtration

You could keep them both in the tank as long as it is clean and the right temp. If you don't want a heater, just do small water changes once every three days.

I'm going to do two tanks. Right now the temp isn't an issue (if all else fails I will get a heater pad for each later) and will do water changes twice a week. I'll put pics up of their tanks when I get them done.

Temp is always an issue. Water heats up in the day and cools down at night causing stress for the fish. I would recommend just buying one heater and using the net for the female. If you get another tank, try to get a 10 gal as female bettas are best off in communities and are not nearly as happy in small containers where there's no other females.

B M.....God saw what you said and he is not happy...i suggest you learn a little more about things before you make statements that may make folks wonder about what you do and do not know...and wind up doubting everything you say.....

Just noticed. We don't use air conditioning much and my house is always cool and temps change.

the fish are not stressed by the temp change..while some may not agree ; that is a simple fact...yes...a really large fast swing in temp will stress them but not like we are talking about here...
not such a good idea to just dump cooler water into a tank..
