Default Cycling with snails?

I want to start cycling a growout tank for my krib fry that are on their way. I have 2 apple snails and I was wondering If I could cycle a tank with one of them. any ideas?

Yup, you can do this, if you are careful. Snails aren't as tough as say zebra danios when it comes to surviving nasty chemicals. I cycled my 5 gallon office tank with 2 snails (one apple snail and one nerite) and both snails are still alive and healthy today. However, I put lots of floating hornwort in the tank to keep the ammonia levels down while the bacteria were growing, so ammonia and nitrite never got over 0.5ppm.

I would suggest using floating plants as I did, or else doing lots of big water changes to keep the levels of nasty chemicals low while you're cycling the tank.

Actually... i have a new idea

The filter pad from my current tank is getting 3-4 months old and its getting a little raggedy from the cleanings i do to it. I think ill just throw that in the new tank and the hopefully it'll cycle in no time.

That's actually a great way to cycle a tank. Just make sure you add some bioload to the tank or the bacteria in the filter pad will go dormant.
