Default New 5G Eclipse System Problem + Question

Hi I just bought a Eclipse System 5 and it has a bio-wheel filter, my bio-wheel filter isn't moving at all, is this a problem that can be fixed? Also what fishes could I put in the 5 G with it?

Can you spin the biowheel freely, using your finger? If you try to spin it and it sticks at all, you may have it inserted improperly. Is your water flowing up and through the media cartridge?

I have a similar tank, and everything works great.

If you are going to add more fish, you should cycle the tank first. After it's done cycling, depending on your betta's personality, you *may* be able to add a couple of Oto Catfish (definitely do not add these until your cycle is complete, because they are very sensitive to water quality.) Or a small school (maybe 4?) of rasboras or white clouds. If your betta is particularly aggressive, the aforementioned options may not work.

Bettas don't tend to like brightly colored tankmates. (They think it is another betta, and want to attack it.) So you are best to stick to tankmates with less color. African Dwarf frogs make good tankmates. Some bettas can be kept with nicely colored shrimp, like Cherry Fire shrimp. However, some bettas will eat them. Ghost shrimp are another possibility.

The water is flowing through up and through the media cartridge and the biowheel doesn't stick but it is not moving at all. I am not really sure if my betta is agressive, he likes his food though he will jump half a body length out of water for food and he likes to swim but he doesn't show any agression except when I put a mirror in his face.

I'll have to check my Eclipse tank and see the mechanics of it. I know the Marineland filters have small caps that fit over the "axle" of the bio-wheel and then snap into place in a bracket which rests in the filter. If any of that is improperly assembled, the bio-wheel will not work as it is supposed to, but I can't remember if the eclipse has these parts or not.

As to tankmates, I've found glo-light tetras make excellent tankmates for bettas, as well as black neons. As mentioned, you will need to make sure the tank is cycled before adding any more fish if you haven't already cycled it for the betta.
