Default Yellow Puffer?

Our supplier has Brackish yellow puffers this week. I tried a search on them but came up with the marine species only.

Any insight as to level of brackish water they should be in? Or any other helpful info?

I have a couple low end and a couple of high end brackish tanks ready. So hopefully one of those will suffice.

Can you get a scientific name, or at least a better description? Could be any number of puffers, from freshwater to marine.

Monotreta travancoricus or Carinotetraodon travancoricus is as close as I can figure.

I know that green spotteds are sometimes called yellow puffers, but they have fig8's and green spotteds listed separately. Perhaps it's a type of dwarf?

I am yet to talk to the supplier, but after the Fahaka issue, I am not willing to take their word for it.

Travancoricus is a Dwarf puffer. 1.5" long, pure freshwater. Toldja he thinks they're all brackish. *sigh* Needs minimum of 3g, 5 is better, not community fish. Match whatever salinity they are at and slowly work on converting them to freshwater.

I may pass on them, but we'll see what they have to say when I phone the order in.

Will let you know on my final decision.

Again, thanks a heap!

Just talked to the supplier. They are indeed a dwarf puffer and are currently in freshwater.

Needless to say, I ordered 3.

I will try to snap a shot of them tomorrow and post it here ( if I have time)

EDIT: Well maybe not "here" but in the freshwater area!

Oh, that's good to hear. I hate hearing about them being in the wrong environment, poor things. Just saw someone today that either is, or wants to, keep a Mekong (T.suvatti aka Arrowhead) puffer in a brackish tank with some monos and toadfish. Ugh. Very bad idea all around.

Just make sure you tell any prospective purchasers that the DPs are carnivores, won't (and shouldn't) eat flake or freeze dried food. Frozen or live worms and mysis shrimp are best. They are one of the few types of puffers that can be kept in groups but not with other fish, as long as they have enough space. And they need a VERY heavily planted tank.

In your opinion, would mysis be okay for the fahaka as well? I always have a good supply of live bloodworms on hand. (It's what my Fig8's get) It's what I started him on when he arrived. I just recently tried him on Krill (which you have advised against) so he hasn't had too much of those.

Thanks

Yup, mysis are good food for them. Krill is okay but shouldn't be used as a main staple as it tends to cause constipation. Shell-on shrimp from the grocery store is also good, silversides, frozen bloodworms, clams, mussels, stuff like that.

Well, no pics of these guys. They sold before I had a chance to get to them with a camera.

Too bad... they were beauties!

The customer who bought them actually did some research! (Rare! ) He pretty much echoed what had been said here.

I knew I should have brought in more... Maybe next week.

DPs are excessively hard to find around here. If you extended your sales to the northeastern United States, you could stock 200 per week and sell out - even if you were ridiculously overpriced. I have a few friends in Canada who can't seem to get their hands on any, either.

I live in RI and I can get them easy. Even Petsmart has them. Check around, they're there somewhere.

Seriously?! Where's the Petsmart? I can't find any in MA, but I haven't really looked in RI.

I know there's a Petsmart in Hyannis (cape cod.) That's where I got my DPs from and they're doing great!

Petsmart.com has a store locater, upper right side of the page.
