Hey all.
So, recently I got a 2-3" stonefish... unfortunately he didn't make it. Too many more aggressive fish combined with his picky eatting and he jumped ship. I obtained a much larger stonefish 10" or so, and he's huge. Unfortunately we have some smaller fish - fiddler crabs and mollies that I know are already targets. After a night in the tank, I woke up to find a fiddler crab claw by his mouth. I was sad a bit, my girlfriend more so, because they added a lot of personality to my tank, and I would hate for them all to be picked off. I have other fish which I'm almost positive won't be harmed... such as archer fish, a Geophaegus(sp) and dragon gobies, all of which are either too fast, too large or too long for him to consider a meal. My question is this: will keeping him well feed with blood worms and feeder fish make my fiddler crabs less likely targets? Or should all be deemed unsafe? The remaining two either hide in caves too big for the stone fish, or sit on floating plants out of the water. Also, does any one know how often you have to feed a stone fish of that size? I don't want to over or underfeed him. His head is about the size of my fist give or take. Btw, I want to confirm something... they absolutely do make a croaking noise. Scared the right bejesus out of me. I went to remove the fiddlers claw from the tank and I accidenlty disturbed him and he raced off for another hiding place. On his way over a really audibly loud CRRRRRRROAAAAAAAK! came from the water. |

Your other fish should be fine- but the fiddlers won't stand a chance in the long run. Stonefish are really just a giant stomach with fins and spines.
What I love about sonefish, is that even though they may "seem" aggressive, they really aren't. They mainly sit in a corner, and i've even witnessed "freshwater snowflake eels" swim around and under them with no troubles. I would feed it once a day. Usually people feed them large amounts, and starve them for a day or two- but it's really not that great for them.
