How big of a filter do I need on a 30 gallon brackish tank?

IMHO a HOB or Cannister which is rated for a 55G tank as the actual flow and the published flow will vary significantly.

Some people say anything from 50-100% more filtration.

A 55-60gal rated filter would be ideal

If you keep up with waterchanges, a simple 30 gallon or 55 gallon HOB would work like suggested...
Though, I find the Rena XP1 does wonders on a tank that size.

It really depends more on the fish you get. Brackish fish are usually a little bigger and more messy, thus the recommendation for a larger filter.

So I can't just have 2 30 gallon filters? Which would be a combined 60 gallons. Or do I need 1 55 gallon HOB? I thought more filtration would be better which would mean that the 2 30 gallons would be better than 1 55. And I was thinking that way if one filter craps out for some reason I will still have 1 working until I can get a new one thrown on it.

Sorry. You can have two smaller filters to add up.

sidneymysnake:

Your original question was
"How big of a filter do I need on a 30 gallon brackish tank?" and I believe that folks tried to help.

IMHO and if you do not mind the extra expense then yes two 30G filters are preferable to one 55G filter.

I already have one 30 gallon filter that's why I was asking if I could just get another one of those. I didn't want to have to buy a 55 gallon filter if I didn't have to. I appreciate all of the help you guys have given me and I can't wait this is all starting to come together for me.
