Dwarf puffers aren't brackish but I would say that putting them with anything would be a mistake. Get a 10 gallon, and put 3 or 4 in there... they'd be great for a species only tank and your other tanks can be a breeding ground for snails that you can pull and put into your puffer tank.

Remember dwarf puffers aren't very fast, so it makes them volnerable to getting terrorized by the faster cichlids, also, some cichlids get big enough to consider these food! Also the nipping of the dwarf puffer could potentially kill a betta, gourami, or simlar fish with longer fins. It's best if these fish are kept in a species only tank... seriously consider it, if you have your heart set on it, then by all means, go ahead... but don't be surprised if it turns out bad.

Also remember that fishprofiles is made by aquarists, some have ideas that are not necessarily true. For instance, someone posted that a domino damsel is a good tankmate in marine aquaria, where I have first hand experiance that they are terrors, extremely aggressive, and have no bias with thier aggressiveness. And will litererally kill by harrassing any passive fish in a system.

I'm a moderator on www.fishprofiles.com and would like to clarify that the compatibility chart only goes by water parameters. It is not setup to take into account the aggression or territorial nature of different fish. That feature is simply a "search" function that compares the Ph, hardness, temp and a couple other categories which are fixed values in the profiles.

I've seen several posts from people who've had success keeping dwarf puffers with ottos, but that's about it.

I have had sucess keeping dwarves with large cichlids. Once they realize they will get a mouthfull of prickles, they spit them out & never bother them again. Of courde, this is in a large than w/lots of decor.

4 Dwarf puffers in a 10gal tank is actually 2 to many to be honest with you. Trust me, I found out the hard way. Puffers are extremely aggresive, even more so to their own kind. Mix in a natural curriosity and you have trouble in the making. With any breed puffer I would say stick to species only but especially with dwarves. 5 gal min per fish and lots of hiding places to hide from bullies is a must.

aquarists post what worked for them, it can depend on the fish so i like to search around and find what a majority think. the same setup doesn't work all the time with the same kind of fish.
