Default Mono Fish

Can these fish live in brackish water their whole lives or do they need to acclimate to marine? If they can live in brackish their whole lives what should the salinity level be around?

Synthetic or natural seawater of a constant 1.021-1.025 specific gravity is ideal for Monos. They can, and some populations do, live in more freshwater (to feed and breed), but these fishes are at their best color, behavior and longevity in full-concentration seawater.

Having kept Monos in the past, all I can say is that you need quite a few of them to keep bullying to a minimum. Any less than 6 for example and 1 will completely dominate by keeping the remaining 5 in a corner.

Nevertheless, they are fantastic fish to keep.

Mono Argentus which is what you have pictured there can and will do very well in 1.010 brackish for their entire lives. The coloration will fade as they mature but that will happen whether you keep it in brackish or in full salt. The myth that these fish must be aclimated to full strength salt water is just that, the only reason, in short, for full strength sea water is as a trigger for them to spawn. As these fish get quite large and require rather large schools to feel comfortable enough to spawn, this should not be an issue for anyone with less than a swimming pool sized tank. Hope this helps.
