Default Petenia splendida

This is one of my new acquisitions. The red bay snook. I've only had him for roughly two weeks and am amazed at his feeding techniques. He (till I sex him/her) is a basket-mouthed predator. his large producible mouth allows him to eat prey up to half its length. His color is coming in slowly in his fins and in parts of his body. They process I am throughly enjoying.

He appears inquisitive yet not overly aggressive and a joy to watch glide thru the tank. He is a great eater and not nearly as hard to break from live food as his tank mates, 2 mono pea**** bass. He is currently divided from the Pbass until I'm sure he is big enough to not be an expensive meal.

If your looking for a very colorful fish (as an adult) that is moderately aggressive give this one a try. Its full of interesting character traits, beautiful color and markings. The reason behind the orange color is even interesting to read if you ever feel like doing a little poking around.

Here is another reason why I love this fish. As you know he is a basket mouthed fish. Able to engulf fish up to half their size. Yesterday I prepared to feed my fish, all tanks. I vary their foods and yesterday was frozen day. I typically drop the cubes in and let them melt in the tank. This has worked fine for years. When I got to the snook, he gulped it. All four inches of him! It didn't even appear to be stuck which is what I worried about after I saw him take it. All that was left of the blood worms was a big bulge in his belly and me sitting there throughly amazed. It is one thing to read about behavior in text books but it is another to visually see it happen. I love fish!!

i just read about why the red variety is red...i think it's amazing. it's because they hang out under these lilies with red undersides, so they blend into their environment. That's fascinating, i think. it's a very beautiful fish, too. i'd love to see some pics of yours!
