Default Need snail advice, reposted

Since no one looks in the inverts section, I'll c&p here.

I couldn't resist today........ I got a snail for the little tank on my kitchen counter. I think its an apple snail. Its about the size of my fist, brownish yellow in color and a very round shell.

I read that I need to feed him veggies and he likes a temp of 72-75ish........ Right?

Any other advice you guys can offer me?

and my second post was this:

Oh, the reason I had to have him was his size.......I've not seen a snail this big in any of my lfs's before.... usually they're the size of a marble but this thing is huge!

Oh, I need help coming up with a name too......

Anyone have any advice for me??

I have a few applesnails and I even bred them. That does not mean I am an expert. A good site is www.applesnails.net
I feed mine veggies and fruits along with fish food and sinking pellets. They eat left overs from the fish and will eat dead or decaying leaves if the are brigs, if you got unlucky and got a cana, live plants are in danger. Feed lots of veggies and the snail will be happy. Since you have only one, odds are you won't have to worry about an egg cluster unless it's a female and she was already "impregnated" at the store.
If that is the case, post again. I can give you tons of advise as I just recently finished mailing the last few of my baby apples off to faraway places, like CT and AL, lol.
Forgot: Your water should be on the hard side for their shell growths. If you have soft water, add some liquid calcium, cuddlebone and add a weekend feeder now and then for the snail to get calcium from.

How about Speedy Gonzalez or Mac (as in McIntosh Apple)?

Well, I don't have any live plants in his tank right now.....but I considered getting some just for him to munch on besides his "food". If I remember correctly my water is on the hard side.....(I haven't checked the hardness for awhile).

He sure does poop alot though! Thanks for your help!

My husband doesn't understand why I'd want a snail on my kitchen counter.......

How can I tell if I got a cana or not? I did read some sites......but as far as I can tell from that info its NOT easy to distinguish the two.
