Hey everyone,
I'm just curious about something I've seen every Dwarf Gourami I've had do....Kindof a rapid display of all fins in an almost spasmic way. I had previously seen this behavior in a male Dwarf Gourami i was unfortunately treating for internal parasites and had thought it part of his condition. A few months since his death, I have purchased a healthy female Dwarf, who is a little bundle of energy (she makes such loud sounds when she takes flake fron the surface--I can hear them all through the house!!). Several times know i have seen this "display" and then she goes about her merry way about the aquarium. Just wondering if any Gourami enthusiasts out there have observed the same behavior....? |

Not just gourami enthusiasts, this is what happens to any fish when there is something in the water which is bothering them. It can either be caused by toxic substances like paint from ornaments or airisol cans, but more commonly it's because of things like high/low ph, high nitrite levels, and many other factors. Best test for all of these things.

If you have a big enough tank with enough hiding places, pH of around 7, you can keep virtually any fish together as long as all the fish are around the same size and these two groups of fish are avioded: Serrasalmus Tetradon(figure eights and dwarfs are the exception). I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families: Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers. |

Ok, well, usually my parameters don't change much, but my ph was a little low(6.6), so I've taken some action to raise the ph (as of a few hours ago it had increased to 6.8), but will do it gradually so as not to shock the fish. Everything else was normal, but I did a partial water change as well just for good measure. Hopefully this will put an end to the rapid fin shaking...

My Dwarfs do that when they`re warding someone off from their territory or just picking a fight.
