Default brown algae

Hi,
I just purchased a 55 gallon with fish and whole setup. It had all been an established setup with a large angel fish and 3 smaller ones, 4 lamp eye tetras?, 2 glass fish, about 8 mixed fruit tetras, 3 cories, 4 danios, and 1 one other unidentified fish that has a black stripe horizontally across the middle of its body. Anyway, when I got the tank, I kept about 35 gallons of the old water and the same filters (an Aqua clear 300 and another Aqua clear 200). It also has 2 power heads. My question is this - about 2 weeks into running, the tank has been getting some brown algae on the rocks and a little on the glass and some decorations. I did about a 15 gallon water change - any suggestions? Is the tank going through the cycling process again even though I basically kept the setup as it was?
thanks in advance,
Gary

If you didn't clean the filters or replace the gravel, the worst case is a "mini-cycle", where some of the bacteria died off when things were off and it takes a little while to get them back up to normal levels. You shouldn't have to start from scratch and by two weeks, the mini-cycle should be over. If you don't have live plants, changing water to lower the nitrates should reduce the algae by removing its food supply. Did the light level on the tank change? Brown algae is usually associated with lower light than green algae.

I did not replace the gravel or change the filters and there was little "down time" between setups. I'm not sure how much the lights were kept on before, but I was planning to keep them on longer than I have been. There are no live plants currently. Thanks for the advice so far............

If you have your lights on for most of the day, then brown algae should be a problem, but if it persists, you can by phosphate removers. I just use distilled water in all of my tanks as I have an RO filter.

Serrasalmus
Tetradon
(figure eights and dwarfs are the
exception).

I keep a successful community of fish in a 4 foot tank including the following families:
Cichlids, tetras, loaches, gouramis, barbs, rainbows, livebearers, killiefish, catfish, puffers.

If by "downtime" you mean the tank was empty for more than a day, your tank is cycling again. Brown algae is normal and will recess once the tank is balanced again. Just remove what you can and wait it out. It doesn't hurt anything.

Are there good algae eaters that would also help and mix well with the particular fish that I have in there already? The "downtime" was only a matter of a several hours between it's past "home" and the new one in my home.

Ottos would be the most sensible option.
Even a few hours can make your filter unstable.
