Default hot water help

My tank water temperature is supposed to be 72-78 degrees.
It is almost always about 80 degrees,so I can hardly ever turn on the light or it will burn up!

How can I get it lowered?

is there a heater in there? Just turn it down if there is... hahah... you may have too high powered of a heater if it consistantly warms it up too much. Also lights shouldn't warm the water that much... espeically if they are florecents...

As for the stock, I don't know if you know this but that bala will GROW!!! they can get 12 inches long and need a lot of space, they tend to want to be in groups too.

I dont have a heater.

If I leave my light on too long it heats up the water.

hmmm... check the max wattage of your light fixture, and then the watts of the bulb... you may want a lower wattage. when I say stock I mean what you have in the tank. The bala shark needs a bigger tank fairly quickly as they will get to be 12" in an unrestricting environment (which you are creating in your 10 gallon) The danios are great fish for your 10 gallon, maybe you should get some cories and some tetras for bottom and mid level swimmers and take the bala shark back.

alright cool... did you check the light fixture at all? You should get a heater for the bala shark too once you get this light problem fixed.

its probably 25 watts also... is it florecent? or incandecent? Florecent usually doesn't look like a normal bulb would while an incandecent just looks like an elongated light bulb

yeah that is most likely your problem... florecent is emit more light and less heat. If you can get some florecent bulbs or 15 watt incandecent bulbs from walmart

is there a glass top? if there is, then its like a pot that is clovered with the top techincally, you are "boiling" the fish.

I wouldn't say boiling... 80 degrees isn't exactly hot... its just a little warmer than it should be. But thank you for the helpful post turtlehead...

if you can't afford to get new lights... I would find someway to prop your fixture up away from the top (such as two peices of wood, or plastic that raise the fixture off the top a half an inch or so... this will give the light some ventilation and it will possibly cool the tank a few degrees.

My tank is always 80-82 degrees. It doesnt hurt the fish and some do prefer a higher temp.
The only thing I've heard is that it speeds up the life cycle of the fish... ?????

The Bala shark is one of the easiest fish to maintain it is also one of the most peaceful that minds its own business at all times. The Tank should be large with live plants and also lots of swimming areas, the Bala is a very active fish which will cover all areas of the tank and will go over the substrate picking up pieces of food that were missed by others. It has no specific feeding requirements and will accept all flake food as well as supplemental live. They do best in a water temperature of between 73o to 79o. pH slightly Alkaline to neutral. The only drawback to this great fish is that it grows too large for most home aquariums. The Bala shark is also a skilled jumper so a tight fitting cover is needed.

size: Up to 16" (40cm), females smaller
tank: 48 inches
strata: All, mostly middle
pH: 5.8 to 7.8
Hardness: Soft to medium. dH range: 5.0 - 15.0
temperature: 72ºF to 84ºF (22-29°C)
(from Badman's Tropical Fish site)

Please get a bigger tank for the fish or else find it a new home in a proper size tank.

Just remember, some fish will not get big in a small aquarium... so if you don't SEE growth after a few months I would say he's being stunted by the tank, and you should get him a new home.
