Default Filter cartridges (pads)

On my 55g filter it has 4 slots for 4 filter pads but I only have 2 in it (one on each side) and I bought two new ones today and was wondering what is the best way of changing them out when they get real dirty. Would the best way be to put a new one in on one side with the current one in there and let the filter run for a couple of weeks to let the new filter pad get plenty of bacteria on it then remove the old one and put move the new one up to where the old one was. Then wait a couple of weeks and do that same thing to the other side. Is that the best way to do it?

The best way is to never change them unless they literally fall apart. Mine are about 7 months old. I rinse them in tank water (when doing a water change) about once per month. There are people on this forum who have used the same filter pads for over a year.

Wow, I never knew that. With my whisper filters I used to just replace the filter cartridge about every month or so. Thanks dwool!

I don't even use filter cartridges, nor do most people I know. We just use regular polyfill from the craft store (or Wal-Mart in my case). Pillow size batch is $2 and lasts a really long time. Just gotta make sure its marked hypoallergenic so it doesn't have any chemicals in it.

Well I've had great success with filter cartridges, so I don't want to mess with success.
