Im stocking a 55 gal tank. I want a large school of neons but cant find a good candidate for a big show fish that is compatible. Discus are too much trouble, Im afraid angels will kill the neons and Ive been told silver dollars are also too aggresive.
Can anyone suggest a nice show fish that is compatible with neons? Thanks |

Angel and discus work fine with neons. As long as there are enough neons, the Angels will usually leave them alone. As a rule, if a smaller fish can fit in a larger fish's mouth, he will try to eat them.

Thanks for the input. That is a point of great contention on the net. Some guys say "never" others "sometimes" and some say OK. But if you have had personal experience thats great. I would like a school of about 30 with lots of overhangs and plants.

Introduce the angels when they are small...and after the neons have had time to fatten up a bit. Then you should have no problems keeping them together.
Also, if you decide against angels or discus...how about a gourami? There are a few that get around 5 inches. They will leave your neons alone. |

You can get a lot of good info at Elmer's Fish Care Charts and Aquarium Handbook. |

While a larger fish like Silver Dollar or Angel may not kill or eat a Neon, the Neon will stress from being around fish that large. Stressed fish don't show colors well. It shouldn't be a question of will XXX fish survive, it should be will XXX fish thrive...

I have small tetras...Rummynose and Flame tetras...around my 2 angels and they always show good coloring. Also, my neons and glowlights are in a 29g with a 4 inch, mean Opaline gourami and they still show good coloring. It may force them to school more, but it shouldn't stress them out...especially if you have some plants (fake or live) and other hiding places for them.

How about cardinal tetras? Would they be a better choice? Also how delicate are they? Ive read that they dont do well in shipping but once established they do well. Drs Smith and Foster is the only source Ive found on the web. Does anyone know if this is a good source? If not any other suggestions?
Thanks |

Cardinals are always a crap shoot. If you can keep them alive for the first week after you get them they are quite hardy though. I have an idea for this tank. Try 50 neon's 4 elephant nose and 4 dragon fish. Trust me the neon's will constantly school and the e nose will also school. The dragon fish look like they would take your finger off but will not hurt a fly. Give it a shot, I think you will be impressed.

Angels will eventually eat your neons, but unless you have kids that will freak, you can keep them together for a couple years while the angels get big enough to swallow them. By then, the neons should be near the end of their life spans anyway.

I suggest you look into the Black Neon's! They are awesome! To me, they look like a fish with a tux on! Just awesome in a large school as well!
And in my tank with my Black Neon's I have Gold Angels. The Gold Angels kinda compliment the Gold in the Black Neon's. Never have had any problems with the angels feeding or pestering the Neon's. Kathy
