hey i have these large pieces of slate that i have added in my tank. They are about 10" long by 4" thick and high. I have 2 blocks on top of each other with a large flat piece and 2 more blocks on top of that, this forms a cliff kinda thing. Anyway, i noticed before that the rocks were startingto turn brown, kinda looked rusty. Obviously not rust because slate doesn't rust. Just today i noticed a bunch of black spots on the slate. What is causing this black algae to appear and what can be done about it?

There is awhole lot of different types of algae. There is info out on the internet about what kills or eats what kind of algaes. the info IMO is confusing and not always workable. However it is a good place to start looking. i have black spot algae on my anubias and nothing eats it off and it is hard to scrape off plants. You could try removing the rock and bleaching it., followed by a good scrub.
make sure you rinse the slate really really well before adding it back to the tank and run some water conditioer over it. |
