Default cae problem

Hi,
Looking for help with my CAE. I've had him about 4 yrs. now, in a 29g. w/ platys, no new tankmates. His anal vent had a red spot on it, looked inflamed. I treated with melafix, water is changed about 40% weekly regularly. The red area is now about the size of an eraser, he is bloated & inactive. He gets zuccini weekly, I tried giving him a pea in case of impaction, no results, I don't think he ate it, doesn't seem to be eating at all. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Maybe treat for bacterial infection?
My Cae had all sorts of intestinal problems. he would bloat up and look like he was going to explode. I would fast him for a few days and then he would be ok for a while. eventually he died while bloated up. I think they pick up stuff from the gravel and get infected.

Mousey, thank you for the reply. I did try the Melafix - anti bacterial - & didn't have any luck. He has bloated up once before & then got better. I agree he must have picked something up & got an impaction & then an infection. He is hanging in there for now. Thanks for letting me know you had the same problem with yours.

Melafix is great for helping fins grow and preventing infection. Usually to treat an infection, I personally like to use something a bit stronger. I'm just not sold on Melafix in a "treatment" capacity for anything other than very slight fin rot. Just my opinion. Be sure to keep him in clean water. I hope he gets better.

Thank you Christine. I agree Melafix is OK for some minor damage,, not always effective. I did go into LFS & try to get something else, they didn't feel anything stronger would help. That was almost 2 weeks ago when I first noticed the sore he could have had trouble passing something or scraped it somehow. I do water changes every week & have changed out a gallon or two every couple days to help him, his breathing is rapid. Thanks for the help!

Christine, as far as something stronger (for the future) what would you suggest?

Honestly I would try to treat maybe with tetracycline. There are so many antibiotics available - everyone has their faves. Since it looks internal, I would probably attempt to give him medicated food, but since hes not eating - thats not going to work

Are CAE's sensitive to salt? I've never had one. For bloating tho with the bettas, if the pea doesnt work - I will usually try a epsom soak.

When I first noticed it I did a water change & added some salt, he's used to it since I add some for the platys now & then. Maybe if I would have caught it sooner... My first indication of him not well was he stayed in his log more & quit cleaning. At first he was slightly bloated & then the red spot developed. I will keep the tetracycline in mind for futre needs, hoping there isn't one, but with 5 tanks you never know. Thanks again!
