Puffers are really sensitive fish (i've heard) and wont do good in communites because they require so much care that other fish dont need? Thats just my guess...haha. So I wouldnt go for the puffers.

And I'm just getting into cichlids! But I heard that if they are housed with smaller schools of fish they will get overly aggressive and eat them all. They are very terrotorial and eat almost anything that will fit in their mouthes. But I'm sure there are exceptions. Ha. Dont do oscars though, you need like a 100g tank per oscar. I would definately stay away from them, they are my dream fish for when I get that 125g aquarium I've always wanted. Hahaha, truly, no joke.

I'd start researching cichlids, I believe those from lake Malawi can get rather large while those from tanganyika stay rather small (I've been researching the tanganyika since they can fit into a 20g) Find a good cichlid sight and do some looking around, they're interesting fish

You might be able to put in 1 oscar, a pair maybe two pairs of kribs, and a large school of the neons and other tetras.

Its not that puffers are incredibly sesitive, they can just be quite aggressive with other fish, depending on the species you get.

i would go with puffers. I have kept both cichlids and some puffers for short periods of time. Even though my time with these animals was limited to months I know that the Green Spotted Puffer and the Dwarf Indian Puffers that I cared for were by far more fun to keep.

well dwarf puffers might not be the bst choice for a 55 gallon as they're so small...and a green spotted would evntually need a marine tank (brackish to start)

I might go with a yellow cichlid as a "centrepiece" fish once I get my 40 gallon platy tank setup. They are beautiful, but I've never kept such fancy fish before so I'm worried. I'll put some live plants in there first to make the water quality even better.
