brown algea

i have some brown algae. my tank is recently cycled and i have heard that this is common. what i have not found out (i did google it) is that if brown algae is dangerous. do i need to get it out somehow, or leave it alone?

Diatoms are harmless. Otos eat it as a part of their regular diet. As do young CAEs. Remove it if you want it to clear up faster but it will not hurt anything. Please check your facts before posting such information.

but it IS deadly to a common pleco isnt it?
thanks for letting me know its harmless. i had some on my heater and it easily scrapped off. and thats the only place where i see any so far

I used an algae remover and it did actually stop it spreading.

I would just get rid of it to be safe. You won't hurt anything by getting rid of it probably, so yeah, I'd just wipe/scrub it off.

male betta, and 4 black neons. the other neon passed away, snail did too! i think the other neon died because of ich maybe, and the snail i have had for sooo long, i am not sure why he died. my water perimeters are fine

Brown algae is fine and will NOT hurt anything. Where is this link saying brown algae is bad? It will NOT kill your plecos. It is a good thing to have in your tank. Getting rid of it defeats the whole purpose of cycling your tank.

Do you have pictures? Once again, where is this link saying brown algae is a killer?

Yes it is a staple in MANY creatures diets INCLUDING plecos....

The brown algae is what I look for before I start adding fish to a tank and I just try to keep it off the front glass (brown or green algae for that matter). The fish don't care if it's there and algae, being a plant, helps neutralize a lot of nasties in your tank...

Just my two cents.

Could be just old age. They don't live very long. Mine only live about 1 1/2 years before they kick the bucket. Even if you know they've had a decent life, it's still sad when they die. I still miss my purple striped snail who died a few months ago; he was by far my favorite.

Wow, must be a different species. Mine are Pomacea bridgesii, and I've never heard of one living five years! Anyway, I think 5 years is a good long life for a snail, of any species.

to my knowledge it was just a common golden snail.
but honestly i have had a few snails in tanks for ages now... and its a possibility one lived for a couple of years, died, and i thought that particular one was still alive.
because i IS hard to tell them apart
