cory cats and sand

My friend would like to Know if it is alright if cory cats can live with sand and also what is the smallest cory cat

i don't see why a cary couldn't live on sand. that is prolly the substrate that they live on in the amazon. the smallest cory is called the pygmy cory. they max out at about 1 inch. If you can't find any pygmy cories, panda cories only grow to about 1 1/2- 1 3/4 inches long.

What size tank does your friend have? be sure to tell him that cories are social and look and act better in schools. 3-5 should be fine. what other kinds of fish does he currently have in the tank or what is he planning on putting in the tank with them?

he has a ten gallon right now with 3 Danios and a glass catfish so would this be fine He is also thinkin on upgrading later

Cories are great with sand.

The smallest cories are C. habrosus, C. hastatus, and C. pygmaeus. Panda cories actually get 2 inches, the 3 mentioned above get around an inch.

i think so. i only have green cories. never even seen a pygmy or one of the others.

do you have the readings for the tank that you could post? they should be fine but you never know. when i clean my turtle tank and my newt tank i do 100 % water changes and add water strait from the tap (well water) and reintroduce them into the tank and they are fine. i've done this with green cories, feeder guppies, zebra danios, goldfish, rosie reds, and whiteclouds.

cories are good with sand as it protects their delicate barbels especially during spawing

The dwarf cories and panda cories are not too hardy. I would not put them in a 2 week old tank unless it was fully cycled (no ammonia or nitrItes, some nitrAtes). Any of those would be fine in a 10g, but cycle the tank first. The dwarf cories are usually hard to find at LFS. If you can get them, go for it and get atleast 6 (they generally do better in large groups), so IMO 3 or 4 isn't enough.

If you can't find any of those, look for False Julii cories (C. trilineatus). They also stay about 2 inches.
