Default filtration for 80g

hey i have an 80g tank with 2 6" tiger oscars and a 6" common pleco. I currently run an aquaclear110 but would to like to upgrade to an external canister. I was looking at gettin a rena xp3 or a fluval 404, which of these two models would be the better choice? Would a fluval fx5 be extreme overkill?

If money isnt an issue..................

If it is...............

Both great filters. From reliable companies.

I use an xp3 on my 65 and I love it.

I also have a fluval and they are good, but I think IME these two brands are better. Havent really looked into the fluval x5 models yet.

I have a fluval exterior and it does a good job. My problem with it is that I cannot manage it myself. When i go to clean it I cannot get the tubing separated from the canister. The suction is so great and i also think that it calciums up.
If i open it monthly it is not too bad but if i only clean it every 3-4 months I just cannot get it apart. hubby has to do it and then he has to really muscle up.

A few plants does NOT make a planted tank. A few plants is a fish only system.

well i only have a couple jungle val and a couple hygrophilia. I dont have special lights, i dont add co2 and i dont fertilize. So this is not a planted tank. I have more fake plants in it then real ones. I just had some nice trimmings so i put them in the tank.

Renas work better for the fish mentioned. Fluvals are good.. but more for lightly stocked tanks, etc.

I'd just use a combo of the aquaclear and rena if you can figure out waterflow issues if there are any. I've seen this combo before and it works pretty well depending on just how large the bioload of the tank was.

The highest fluval model is usually used on tanks a few hundred gallon in size. I'd just go a little lower- you won't need that much, or need to spend that much.

ya i think i am goin to get the XP3 and run it with the AC 110.

Do you think it would be a bad idea to try to add a convict to the mix. I really like those fish and heard they get along with oscars pretty well.
