Eclipse 12 lights/melted?

Ok, I have a question, my 12 gallon Eclipse tanks light wouldn't come on and I thought that since I was off today I would go get a new bulb, I unplugged the hood and took it off and it looks like the lamp part ( where the lamp wiring is) melted and cracked, its gross looking, so now I am thinking that I may need a complete top for my tank.
Has anyone else every had problems with their tanks, this tank is about 4 years old if this matters at all.
I guess fish and plants will have to go lighless for a few days till we can figure this out.

Hmm. I've never owned an Eclipse before, so I don't know exactly what could've happened. If the hood is still salvagable, you might look into getting a lighting retrofit kit. They come with a ballast, reflector, necassary wiring etc. that can be mounted in your existing hood. I've heard of people with eclipses doing this before. It also gives you better lighting options.
