As long as it fits and everything seems good, I don't see a problem.

The fixtures are a different size. The lighting is the same wattage but different lengths. A 10 gallon is 20 inches long while a 20 is 24.

Not necessarily true, that depends on the hood. I just found this out today, the hard way! My 20 ga tank takes an 18" bulb 15 watts. I think the kit came with a cheap hood and thats why. I had to get one special ordered for it :/

You can put a 10 gallon size light fixture on top of a 20 gallon tank, but you will still need a lid for the 20.

10 gallons are so cheap because there is little material involved, the glass doesn't need to be thick, and they are a popular tanks size. Almost everyone just starting out buys a 10g.

$35 for a 20g tank is a pretty decent price in my area. a 20g LONG around here is $45 new.

Start checking garages sales and thrift shops (I know, I say this a lot...huh?) but you can get some GREAT deals. I stopped at a garage sale today that had two 20g tanks for $5 each. My last tank (30g was $14 used, like new).
