Bullhead, they get about a foot or over... spastic, aggressive, and eat a lot.

Definitely looks like a bullhead catfish (maybe of the black variety).

they eat ANYTHING, so dont worry about it, drop the food in at night and it will be gone in the morning, they are predators so make sure to offer meat protein, and they are messy fish so get alot of filtration in there.

Its not like that in all places. I don't believe that is the law where I am. Here, as long as it is legal size, you can do what you wish. You should check your local laws to see where they stand.

I'd also agree that it's a bullhead and I agree with Flamingo in that they will get aggressive, so watch it if he is going to have tankmates. However, they dont get nearly as large as a channel catfish.

Not really. Many species of game catfish make good pets and can become very personable. I have a small channel catfish in my koi pond and he makes a very entertaining inhabitant, of course he will grow large so he does require the space that my pond offers him.

Not to mention the other hundreds and hundreds of catfish species that make excellent aquarium fish.....corydoras, synodontis, plecostomous.....etc, etc.

Don't they also sting with their "whiskers"? They are wild up here in North Dakota and I have heard people say to watch out for their "whiskers"

I'm pretty sure that only the spines on the dorsal fin and pectoral fins of catfish are venomous and can puncture you if you mishandle them.

Yes the spines are poisonous but very mild to humans (not like a lionfish or platypus). There are some humans who react badly to it but I've never heard of any fatalities with them. If you've fished for cat for at least 5 years odds are you got caught by a fin once or twice.

Around here, it's actually common for people to get trapped in a small school of them. Someone I know, a few years back, had jumped into a lake and landed on them... needless to say it was probably very painful. The bigger the catfish, the more powerful the sting, but they're nothing like being stung by a madtom, etc. which are probably a fourth of the size.

Be prepared to offer a tank around 100 gallons+ for a 12 inch or so catfish. Your picture does make it look like a black bullhead, which are some of the largest.
Grows very quickly, the 4 "hatchlings" i've been raising for the past week have already tripled in size. They slow down at about 4-5 inches, but like most "larger catfish", they're known to outgrow most tanks within a year.
