Default killer water change-water was posin!!

Yesterday I did a 50 percent water change on my 29g with 6 neons in it. Lucklielly it wasnt all my tanks as i ran out of time!! After the water change I came back and 5 neons were dead and one looked stiff and it would like spasm somtimes.I wanted to save it so i transfered to a new tank.then it swam to the top and died

My question is why would have caused this?

I used prime on my tap water

How often do you do water changes?

Do you use a python or buckets?

Maybe the new water's temp was drastically different from the tank water's temp. Need more info.

Agreed. Typically massive deaths from water changes are due to too much time passing since the last water change, or very different temperatures between the tank and source water. One other possibility that occurs to me is do you alter your pH? This difference in the pH readings may have put your tetras into shock.

Did you check the pH of the tap water? I've read of water systems adding way too much NaOH and putting people in the hospital with the water. Call your water system, ask them if there are any recent changes.

Do you live alone? What I am wondering is if someone may have accidentally used one of your milk jugs for something in the last week and a half. Even though I live alone I wrote in big huge letters on my fish buckets "Fish only never use soap" just in case. It's possible someone messed with your stuff.

I am really sorry to hear about the losses. I know how much that sucks!

I would definitely check your water straight out of the tap just to see where your tap is at.
