I had a 55 gallon tank up an running with no water problems for about 3 weeks.
Last week the tank broke (center brace, see previous post), transfered my fish to a existing 30 gallon, bought a new 55 added all existing gravel, what little water was left (5 gallons or so) and started new. Like a fool I didnt cycle the tank..........let it run for 72 hours and slowly added all my fish back. now one week later......total crash.........amonia is up over 8 (yikes) and PH is way low <6.0. I moved all my fish back to the 30 two days ago to try and cycle it out. however, it has actually gotten much worse......water is so cloudy I cant see through. I am running a fluval 304 and a whisper 40 on this tank...........any suggestions? I have done the following.....added PH nuetral, added amonia nuetralizer........etc. I am changing out about 5 gallons a day........leaving lights, filters and air pump on. Tips, suggestions, HELP............... |

Don't add any more ammonia remover. Now that there aren't any fish in there, you WANT ammonia to be high so that the ammonia-eating bacteria can establish themselves. The only reason to lower ammonia is to save your fish, since you've moved them, you don't have to worry about that. I'd just leave the tank alone for now. Let it run, add a little fish food now and then to feed the ammonia, and it will stabilize itself with time.

Wait it out. It's going to take time.
There's no reason to add chemicals (other than ammonia to keep the bacteria going). Just let it do its thing. lol Read up on fishless cycling, and have at it Last edited by Apotheosis; 08-02-2007 at 09:39 PM. |

Over 8??? Holy crap... I added some BIG fish into my 450 before it was cycled and it never got over 1.. You must have had a HUGE load in that tank.

not really.......my basic feeling was that the tank was ok.........just the fact that I had all new water in it blew it up. But I could be way off........after all I am new to this and on my fourth glass of wine............ |
