Ok, as in my signature I've got a 50g tank stocked with the fish listed (and temporarily 8 guppy fry) but I want to get a Tiger Oscar for my 4ft tank (yet to be set up) and was wondering if I could put the little guy into my 50g until the 4ft tank is ready. Thing is though, it could take a few months (6 at the most) and I was wondering how fast tiger oscar's grow? I know they get really big when mature but if he's not going to grow too fast then I'm guessing I could get away with having him in my 50g for a while? I'm going to start getting the items needed for the 4ft tank soon e.g. filter one week, heater next then gravel plants etc and as soon as my ex builds me a stand for it I'll be able to set it up to cycle.
Any opinions are welcome. Thanks

No, you will most likely not get away with it. Even as young fish, they are predators and they do grow fairly quickly. I wouldn't chance it.

I have to agree with Scuba - my first Oscar grew from about 1-2" to about 8" in an 8 month time period.
The tetras in the tank would be lunch sooner or later - and the Oscar may decide up uproot and move around your plants just for giggles. Plus - I wouldn't put an oscar in a newly setup tank - I like to mature a tank for at least a few months (preferably six) before I introduce an oscar - I usually add my dither fish of choice (giant danios are good) and let everything mature before I add the big poop machine. I hope your planning a 4' by 18" tank, not a 4' x 1' (ie 55g) tank -- an Oscar would actually do better in a 36x18" 50g than a 48x12" tank (more room to turn around, and greater surface area equals better oxygen exchange) |

I have seen quarter sized oscars triple in size in 2 months in 15 gallon tanks, in a 50, it will be even faster.

Plus... you have a 10 gallon...
anyway, it will be better to wait till your tank is set up.

When I do set the tank up I'll be using the filter from my 50g (and put the new one into my 50g) , use some of the water from my 50g and that stuff you get when u gravel vac, can't remember what it's called starts with an 'm' and apparently that's a great starter, like instant cycle! I'll let it cycle though for a few weeks anyway before adding any permanent fish, might even stick a few expendable guppy fry in there to help it along. It's a 4ft x 1ft tank I'm pretty sure..maybe even 1.5ft high..
anyhoo will keep you all up to date and let you know when it's set up! Thanks

What size is the 4ft in gallonage? Oscars will do much better in a 75g than a 55g.

the word your looking for is "mulm" and the oscar will only be comfortable in a tank that size til he is 6 inches or so.

I've no idea how many gallons or litres it holds, I haven't filled it. It's been sitting upright on it's end in my bedroom since I got it. I just don't have a surface large or stable enough to put it on where it won't be in the way. I'm considering gently sliding it out to the garage and filling it soon, if for no reason but to check for leaks so I can seal them and they have a chance to cure before I do set it up so if/when I do that I'll take note of how much it holds and get back to you all. I was even thinking that if need be I could rearrange my tanks and use my 50g (which is shorter but a lot taller) for the tiger oscar and the 4ft tank for the inhabitants of the 50g at present. I'll have to see when the time comes i guess.

hah you crack me up yea i definitely wouldnt chance putting an oscar in your 50g only because my uncle had them a while back and they got HUGE in a 3 month time span. and they would definitely make a quick meal out of the fish inhabiting your 50g at the moment. good luck with setting up your stand however =P

You could try it, but your other fish would be fish food.
