Ok. Crazy time. I have 11 glowlite tetra in a 10g along with 3 baby platies (they are about as big as the tetra) I know I am overstocked, but they are happy and that's ok with me. Heres where the crazy part comes in.
I have NEVER done any water change or gravel syphoning on my tank ever and its been set up for almost 3 months now. The gravel is light blue and has no signs of algae or fish waste on the surface of it and the water is crystal clear. It hasn't changed since I added the fish. And get this, only one fish has died and that was in the beginning. Is this crazy or what? It has 20g of filter on it...double...but not really that great for this span of time! I'm amazed. What do you all think? Could I leave this tank forever like this and just change the filter media every once in a while but never touch this water and it will stay awesome? I am baffled since all the other tanks I've had have at some point (within 2 weeks usually) crap out and look like **************** in some way! Haha. I also have a puffer fish (pea puffer freshwater) in a 5.5g and haven't changed his water for 1 month with a 10g filter and the water is crystal, no waste in sight. So, feedback anyone?

Clear water does not mean clean water... algae doesn't grow to much with low light.
Crazy part - You not providing proper care for your fish.

You can't tell what the tank is doing by looks alone. You need to test the water for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. But I'm sure you already know this since all of your other tanks have at some point crashed.

I think that when you have fish in a tank, and you don't clean it, and the waste slowly builds up, they get used to it, and they can survive for a month or two. But if you put in new fish, they will not be used to it and will die. But yes, you definetely should do water changes because the filter doesn't suck up that much waste.

nitrate is clear.
Nitrate builds up in a tank that doesn't have regular partial water changes. pH doesn't show up in clarity - clear water can have any pH - and pH slowly goes down in tanks that don't have partial water changes. Just because its clear doesn't mean its healthy. And 3 months is a blink of an eye. I don't even consider my tanks "stable" til about 6-8 months. keep in mind that vodka is clear, and your fish can't swim in it ! Clear doesn't mean anything. |

You should probably not own a tank.
