IMHO I would not do that one (either No.3 or No. 4)

As best that I can ascertain from the literature these products "deal with" the symptom and not the problem.

Please note that the last two posts in the above cited thread address theory when I was attempting to, via my thread generation and post, address problem solving (as alluded to in your post).

What does the algae look like? Can you take pictures?

How much light is over the tank?

How often do you do water changes and how much water do you take out?

The tank is almost overstocked as it is, I wouldn't add any more fish.

Olie, what are your ammonia, nitrIte, and nitrAte readings?

Does the purple stuff look anything like this picture: http://aquariumalgae.blogspot.com/20...ear-algae.html? Or like this: http://aquariumalgae.blogspot.com/20...ush-algae.html?

Different types of algae are caused by different things. Its best to find what type you have and fix the problem, instead of trying to cure it. If conditions that caused it stay the same, its going to come back.

Have you had your water tested? A lot of the time the algae is from high nitrates and nitrites and ammonia. Using some sort of chemical on the tank is just a quick fix of the visable signs of a problem, it won't fix the underlaying problem of why the agae is there.

I may have missed it but I need more tank specs. It is overstocked but did you say it was planted? I see its a 10 gallon but what is the light over it? Substrate? Filtration? And stock list of plants would be helpful also. Many planted tank owners get algae because they dont have enough plants in the tank or they are all slow growers. Brown algae is expected (which is one type you have). Will leave soon enough by itself. Its the other I'm worried about.
