Hi,
I have a Tropiquarium 88 (130 litre) coldwater aquarium. It currently has one fish which I believe is a comet goldfish. My tank hasn't been going for very long (about 3 weeks) as I have just moved my fish into this new tank. My question is that I cannot tell if my filter is actually filtering the water. I know this sounds really stupid. I am running the filter that came with my tank (fluval BioLife 88). I have currently got my water level on the max line on the filter. If I have the water below this, it starts blowing out air from a hole just above the water outlet. I don't want it to do this as I have got a seperate air pump. I know that water is going through the filter as I can see it dripping onto the 'bio media' inside and can feel a strong current of water being blown out, but I just can't feel it being sucked in except for the hole which sucks air in. I have watched particles float straight past the filter without being drawn towards it. I am wondering if the water is just being sucked in from where the air comes in, as I have the water level over the hole, so it's just sucking water instead of air. Basically, should I be able to feel it sucking / see it pulling in particles in the water? And should I have it sucking the air in? I'm very confused! I can't really make this post make sense as this is very hard to explain - hopefully someone on this forum has the same filter as me and understands what I am going on about.

I'm not familier with those filters, but my guess, is that if it's pushing water out, then it's sucking water in, and if the water is going in and out of the filter, my guess, is that it's filtering. That was just using some common sense on my part, but like I said earlier, I'm not familier with that filter.

Thanks, fishbguy. You're probably correct!
Does anyone on this forum own my filter?
