Be careful with these, they are illegal in a lot of places. I would say 1 only, because a 55 isn't big enough to hold a school. My understanding is that piranah, like tiger barbs and serpae tetra, without a big enough group to spread aggression around, will fight constantly and hurt each other. I'm not a characin person and have never kept them, so its only my understanding based on reading.

I would have to agree. 1 would fit in a 40 gallon but to have a school, which is the only way to keep them short of a school, but to have more would require90 plus gallons.

My advice to you would be to not even consider red belly pirahnas for a 55 gallon tank. In order to thrive, they need to be kept in groups of 5 or more. Reason is they become VERY skittish and uncomfortable when kept alone and can have problems when kept in captivity singly. And like already mentioned, if they are kept in pairs or small groups, one will become dominant and probably kill the other one off. Seeing as how you couldn't fit more than one in a 55 gallon tank, don't even consider them. When you get at least a 125 (many suggest a 300+ gallon tank) then you can think about getting a group of red bellies.

I agree with scuba kid they simply need a bigger tank to thrive because to thrive they need a school.
