Default 55 Gallon Pics

Well here goes. Let's see if the pics work this time.

My 55 gallon is coming along great. Not adding anything new for a while. I want to get the mollies and the tetras their own tank too, possibly 30 gallon (26). The fry will keep the 10 gallon for now.

How long do you think it will take before my common pleco outgrows my 55 gallon? I honestly adore his personality, I just wish I had known when the LFS sold him to me for my 10 gallon. *sigh*

My common pleco named Camo:

Hmmm, after previewing the post - any ideas why flickr pics don't come in? I used the "Insert Image" button and the codes are there. Weird.

Also, any reason why the fish are eating the plants, to the point that they are coming up? I figured they would nibble on them, but not devour entire leaves at the bottom. I know they are getting enough food.

Nice tank. You have captured what I hope to make my 55g into. With the rock.

Thank you. I loved making the caves with the slate pieces. It turned out better than I thought and pretty easy to do. Then, when I vacuum, I just lift one side and then put it back and do the other. Not bad at all.

The pleco should be about a foot or larger by 6-8 months, I would just trade him in now while he is still small. The larger they are, the harder they are to trade in depending on LFS.

Check your butterfly pleco to make sure its not a sailfin, sometimes they are mislabeled.

Thanks - will do.

I really wish I didn't have to give him up, but 55 is the biggest I am going for now.

ya I was going to ask if the rock is glued together. Are you not afraid that the fish wont knock them down.

They are actually pretty heavy and fit together perfectly. You have to watch and make sure they are steady. I had them on a piece of wood, trying different configurations before I came up with this one. Some of them were more unsteady.

Ya my idea is to buy some flat rock (or find it and clean it good) and lay them down on a piece of drift wood I have and cover it with sand. Cause It will make a great cave for my cherry barbs. Then just trying to find a good place for my angles I am getting.

Well at my LFS they sell it. But it all depends. In Tn we are full with flat rock. I prob could go out back dig a whole. 1 to 2 feet and find a bunch.

There you go, just play around with it and make sure it is sturdy - then clean (boil the rock) and place in the tank. I actually saw this configuration on another tank - but theres had more little caves in there.

One of the larger LFS has them. I just used a nice slate. Boil it first.

I have to boil it even if I get it from my LFS? Also if I silicone it together would that be sturdy?

I did, just to be on the safe side. Hmmm, I have no idea abut the silicone. Maybe do a search on that.

Silicone loses its "sticking" power after awhile and its much easier IMO to pick up a couple rocks to clean around them. Plus, if you have big rocks siliconed together, its not that strong, so chances are when you go to pull it out of the water, its going to come apart.

I have a thing about boiling rocks.....it just seems kind of dangerous to me. I suggest pouring boiling water over rocks or scrubbing them under hot water and then soaking them in dechlored water for awhile.

okay, but just to be on the safe side can I silicone it? Is there something that won't lose its sticking power that I could use?

Nice tank. I love natural looking tanks. The rocks are very cool and driftwood is always a great choice. I'm not sure why the fish are eating the plants at that rate. My fish will eat the dying leaves some times but usually leave the healthy plants alone.
